ABOUT ILLUSTRATION
Not too long ago, I began to illustrate books.
To get to the images I found that, just like an actor slipping into a role of a character, I had to put myself in the place of the author, to think his/her ideas , to feel the emotions of the figures in their stories.
This seems fascinating to me.
The picture books that I thought up by myself ... is another story ...
Astrid Saalmann was born in Germany in 1964.
She studied graphic arts and painting in Bielefeld and Madrid, where she is living and working for the past half of her life.
ABOUT ARTWORK
Garments and monsters. Both, I think,
have close relationship with past.
With history.
When I work with worn clothes, I feel, that there is a kind of memory inherent in them. By putting them in a certain position, they reveal possibilties of human behaviour. And like a fancy dress fixes the acting of its owner, each garment has it´s own possibilities, depending on its cut and its pattern.
And like monsters, that can tell stories about the fears of society, clothes tells stories.
